PARKER GRAY

The Uptown-Parker-Gray Historic District encompasses 984 contributing buildings in the northwestern quadrant of the Old Town Alexandria street grid as it was laid out in 1797.

The district mostly consists of small colorful row houses, town houses and a number of commercial buildings. The buildings are representative of popular 19th-century architectural styles including Greek Revival and Queen Anne.

Parker-Gray was originally a haven for escaped slaves and freedman during and immediately after the Civil War.

With new residential and commercial development along the Rt. 1 corridor and the paralleling Fayette on the west, Parker-Gray is making an exciting comeback in the urban life of Alexandria. Parker-Gray is also conveniently located between the King and Braddock Road Metro Stations.

The Uptown-Parker-Gray Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2010. A listing in the National Register of Historic Places provides formal recognition of a property’s historical, architectural, or archeological significance based on national standards used by every state
